Punch Brothers w/ Chris Thile on the Mandolin & Loudon Wainwright III @ Bass Concert Hall 9/10

It’s a triple threat… of sorts heading your way on Friday, September 10th at Bass Concert Hall. Texas Performing Arts and L Style G Style has set up a SPECIAL DOUBLE BILLPunch Brothers with Chris Thile on the mandolin, and Loudon Wainwright III– to celebrate the best of American acoustic music. With renowned names such as these and the classic style of music to go along with it, there’s no doubt in my mind that this event will draw a large audience. Even if acoustic bluegrass and folk isn’t your style of music, I encourage you to look into these guys.

For a band that relocated, scrapped everything they had before to start from scratch, get back to their roots, and commit to the music, Punch Brothers, has come a long way. Giving up the fast-paced routine  many would kill for to have fun playing the music you love says something about those that do it.  Since that point, Punch Brothers haven’t been the average folk band, putting them even higher on my list of bluegrass/ acoustic bands that I actually like. Consisting of a violin, cello, acoustic guitar, banjo, and mandolin and incorporating the risky concept of classical music, crazy things happen! There are times when they sound like a full blown symphony (without the horns though), and others when they have more of a poppy sound while staying close to the bluegrass feel. For the love of music, check these guys out! They are more than just interesting and with mandolin prodigy, Chris Thile, as the front man the “more than just interesting” part won’t be wrong.

Loudon Wainwright III has been a part of the folk music genre for quite some time now, earning him the musical achievement as an icon within it. Manned with acoustic guitar and banjo, Wainwright entertains his audience with tales of life and experiences through song. If you are one for listening to the lyrics and actually listening to what the artist has to say you’ll love Mr. Wainwright; his lyrics are witty, funny, and contradictory yet they all seem to have truth to them.
