Leave it to Capital T Theatre to present the theatre-goers of Austin a production that contains sex, gluttony, dancing, wrestling, violence, and a sacrifice all in under two hours. This is not a complaint by any means, mind you, it’s more like shock and admiration that such a feat could be accomplished. On Thursday, Capital T Theatre opened with “HUNTERS GATHERERS” a black comedy written by Peter Sinn Nachtrieb.
Nachtrieb’s award-winning play “HUNTERS GATHERERS” takes place one evening in Pam and Richard’s apartment (Rebecca Robinson & Kenneth Wayne Bradley) who are hosting a yearly dinner with their longtime high school friends, Tom and Wendy (Brad Price & Liz Fisher). The “fab four” have been through it all: prom, graduation, college, marriage, careers….but nothing could really prepare them for what takes place on this seemingly “normal” night. Sophistication, friendships and romantic ties are severed when animal instincts take over and the foursome spiral into devolution. I honestly don’t want to delve any farther into what takes place for fear that I will give something away that might spoil this raunchy and hilarious production. If you offend easily you might not appreciate the events that take place, but if you have a sense of humor and want to be shocked then this will completely mesmerize you.
There’s never been a dull moment in anything that Mark Pickell (Director and Scenic Designer) and Capital T Theatre produce and “HUNTERS GATHERERS” is no exception. Having seen several performances by Kenneth Wayne Bradley and Rebecca Robinson, their portrayals of Richard and Pam are highly notable and probably the most peculiar and jocular that I’ve seen. The hate-hate marriage that resides between Liz Fisher‘s Wendy and Brad Price‘s Tom is also cause for much of the tension and hilarity throughout the play.
You’ll be lured in a riotous laughter and be squirming in your seat with some of the material, but regardless, “HUNTERS GATHERERS” is a must-see.
