We’ve got a big weekend coming up. It’s the one weekend that the city looks forward to all year, full of huge crowds, great food, and even better music. Even though Zilker Park’s curfew might shut things down at 10, thanks to this year’s aftershows, the festivities of ACL weekend don’t have to stop once you leave the park. While the festival and many of the aftershows might be sold out already, we’ve got two nights coming up at the always classy Beauty Ballroom that are more than worth your time and hard-earned cash.
First up is Friday night’s show with one of the best young Southern rappers to come around in the past few years, the extremely talented Big K.R.I.T. He’s been releasing excellent mixtapes since 2005, but didn’t catch the world’s eye until 2010′s “K.R.I.T. Wuz Here”, led by the kickass single “Country Shit“, which gave rise to the ascent of one of the freshest voices around. Things got even better with 2011′s breakout “Return of 4Eva”, featuring big name guest like Chamillionaire, Bun B, and Ludacris; which got praise from all types, helping K.R.I.T. to be as popular at frat parties as he was on music blogs. With a BNM from Pitchfork and a record deal in tow, he had a huge year in 2012 with a chill mixtape that served as a prelude to his first studio album, “Live From The Underground”, a very good rap album that found K.R.I.T. facing an internal struggle of whether to alter his underground stylings and sound to fit a more widespread audience. It ended up being a success, an indelible slice of authentic Southern rap led by awesome singles like “I Got This”, which you should watch below.
