Big K.R.I.T. w/Slim Thug & Questlove @ Beauty Ballroom

We’ve got a big weekend coming up. It’s the one weekend that the city looks forward to all year, full of huge crowds, great food, and even better music. Even though Zilker Park’s curfew might shut things down at 10, thanks to this year’s aftershows, the festivities of ACL weekend don’t have to stop once you leave the park. While the festival and many of the aftershows might be sold out already, we’ve got two nights coming up at the always classy Beauty Ballroom that are more than worth your time and hard-earned cash.

First up is Friday night’s show with one of the best young Southern rappers to come around in the past few years, the extremely talented Big K.R.I.T. He’s been releasing excellent mixtapes since 2005, but didn’t catch the world’s eye until 2010′s “K.R.I.T. Wuz Here”, led by the kickass single “Country Shit“, which gave rise to the ascent of one of the freshest voices around. Things got even better with 2011′s breakout “Return of 4Eva”, featuring big name guest like Chamillionaire, Bun B, and Ludacris; which got praise from all types, helping K.R.I.T. to be as popular at frat parties as he was on music blogs. With a BNM from Pitchfork and a record deal in tow, he had a huge year in 2012 with a chill mixtape that served as a prelude to his first studio album, “Live From The Underground”, a very good rap album that found K.R.I.T. facing an internal struggle of whether to alter his underground stylings and sound to fit a more widespread audience. It ended up being a success, an indelible slice of authentic Southern rap led by awesome singles like “I Got This”, which you should watch below.

Joining Big K.R.I.T. that night is Houston’s very own rap superstar Slim Thug, who won’t be appearing at the festival proper, so this is your only chance to see him. You know him as another one of the best Southern rappers, with great singles from “Like A Boss” and “So High“. He’s always been one of the hardest from Houston’s vibrant rap scene, winning his hometown’s love with anthems like “Houston“, his tributes to the Texans. With two of the top artists from the scene, Friday night’s show is an absolute can’t miss for any serious fans of Southern rap.
Saturday night’s show at Beauty Ballroom is without a doubt one of the best DJ set’s you’re going to see all year, if not ever. If you’ve been keeping up with the ACL schedule this year, you’re aware that one of the biggest draw this year is The Roots, the Grammy-winning rap-soul legends who also happen to have the best day-job in existence as the backing band for The Late Show with Jimmy Fallon. The awesome news is that Saturday night at Beauty Ballroom will feature a DJ set from none other than Questlove, the drummer and de facto leader of The Roots, who’s talents in addition to his drumming include production work for big names like Jay-Z, Common, and Erykah Badu to serving up hilarious tweets and engaging in political controversies with GOP congresswomen. He’s one of the funniest and most vocal drummers around, and he’s got some pretty famous fans.
That’s not a bad record, and we’re just beyond excited at the chance to catch a DJ set from the most prominent members of The Roots, who will be keeping the party going all night at Beauty Ballroom. Along with the previous night’s set with Big K.R.I.T. and Slim Thug, this weekend’s ACL aftershow lineup is shaping up to be a great one to remember. You can keep the party going all weekend long.
