Q: Where did your name come from?

A: Chorizo comes from a hot sweaty cantina in South Texas with old conjunto 45′s playing on the jukebox. Funk comes from wearing burlap drawers as a shorty dancing and singing to James Brown.

Q: What was your favorite Halloween costume?

A: I did Enrique James (Mexican cousin to Rick James that played drums for a week in his band in the 80s) for a Prince/Rick James halloween costume party….Ladies Luv Leather

Q: What is the biggest impact DJing has had on your life thus far?

A: The impact you can have on peoples lives via music. I really enjoy seeing folks loose their inhibitions and get loose to the music. It’s a beautiful thing.

Q: Where did your name come from?

A: My affinity for the soda beverage Slice… and my ability to cut shit up… and I’m an overgrown child.

Q: What are your influences? both local and National?

A: Klever, Craze, C2C, Le Jad, Netik, Jayceeoh, Dj Shadow, Mark Ronson, Naruto

Q: Who is your favorite DJ to watch/ listen to and why?

A: Dj Orion. He plays what he wants and in ways that I don’t know how. He is also a talented producer as well a visual artist. He’s pretty much a dj super hero.

Q: Tell us a story about the most ridiculous thing that has happened to you while DJing.

A: I was on stage up on a riser at a show in Canada and I stepped back after a mix and fell off the back of it. When I climbed back up, I did that thing where you sit backwards and swing your legs around, but instead I just sat in a spilled drink.

Q: What is the biggest impact DJing has had on your life thus far?

Touring the world, putting out records, meeting my heroes, and running a label. It’s been most of my life now for about 10 years, and its been unbelievable hard work, and there are always more downs than ups, but I have loved every second of it.

Q: Why do you think Red Bull Thre3style has become so relevant in the DJ Community?

A: Because it’s about the essence of DJing: whether the crowd is enjoying it or not. If you cant rock a party, than said party shant be rocked. And at the end of the day, isn’t that the point of DJing? Yes. Yes it is.

Q: Who are your influences? Both local and National?

A: My influences are too many to comprehensively list, but off the top of my head… local influences include everyone in my band BLAZE (Brannen Temple, Yoggie, Mike Malone, Ephraim Owens, Philippe Vieux), Gary Clark Jr, ARE, Foulmouth, Bavu Blakes, LOEGz, Baby G, Enfoe. National influences include DJ Aladdin, DJ Premiere, Klever, DJ Shadow, D Styles, Melo D, Babu, Kool Herc, Jazzy Jeff, Tribe Called Quest, UGK, Geto Boys, The Terrorists, Spice 1, Bill Withers, Otis Redding, Nina Simone, Miles Davis.

Q: Tell us a story about the most ridiculous thing that has happened to you while DJing.

A: While DJing at Plush in Austin, TX around 2001 some cat stumbled past the bouncer and approached my DJ booth. He proceeded to pull down his pants and piss on the booth. The bouncers were scared to throw him out b/c his pants were around his ankles and he was in mid piss. I immediately stopped the music and yelled at him over the system… All of the patrons were pointing and laughing… his reply was “Sorry man I couldn’t hold it”.

Q: Who is your favorite DJ to watch/ listen to and why?

A: To watch, Jazzy Jeff, b/c he’s been doing it since the mid-80s and can still rock a party with technical skill better than 95% of cats today. To listen, D Styles, b/c he’s always intricate, technical and advancing.

Q: Tell us a story about the most ridiculous thing that has happened to you while DJing:

A: So many. Someone was gonna shoot me for not playing a Z-ro song at the club at the time that the guy ask for it. This guy came to the club EVERY Saturday and asked for the same song at the same time. Little did I know that he had just been released from jail and Z-ro was all he knew. So one night he just snapped on me for not playing it at the time he asked for it EVEN THOUGH I’d played it all the other times he asked for it. The management at that time thought it was funny. To make a long story short, I NO LONGER WORK AT THAT CLUB.

Q: Why do you think Red Bull Thre3style has become so relevant in the DJ Community?:

A: Battling to me has always been healthy. It keeps you on your toes. In previous battles you have 2-6 mintues to get up, do your thing and then get off. Red Bull ThreeStyle gives you 15 minutes to rock the party and have fun while doing it. It’s a different form of battling that is needed right now.

Q: Who is your favorite DJ to watch/ listen to and why?

A: I have a lot but mainly, J.Rocc. I honestly think he can’t do NO WRONG in my book. His timing is always on point and he approaches the turntables like a soul drummer or a jazz musician. Oddly enough he was the dj for 2 of my TOP 5 favorite producers of all time, which really made me enjoy him that much more!
