Aw yeah!! Now, I know that it feels like Austin has a music festival almost every other week, but who are we kidding? It’s the music capital of the WORLD! The genres of music are endless: like punk, R&B, psych-rock, and folk, but coming up on April 6 & 7 there will be a music festival that is truly like no other in our diverse city. Wobeon Fest is Austin’s World Music Festival, featuring an extremely eclectic mix of artists from all over the world playing all different styles. While it seems like many festivals get filled up with southern folk acts or indie bands from Brooklyn, Wobeon Fest is the rare treat that brings artists from places like Bermuda, Colombia, Benin, and Mali. These unique and worldly artists will join in Austin for a weekend long celebration to bring us music that is often overlooked, yet so amazing.
The festival is coming up in two weeks over at the Mexican American Cultural Center, and while you may not know every name on the poster, we guarantee that you’ll find plenty of extremely talented musicians that you probably had no idea were out there. One of the headliners is the reggae sensation Collie Buddz from Bermuda. Signed to Columbia Records, his debut record came in at number one on the reggae charts and charted all over the world in places like Germany and Japan. He’s become an international reggae champion with smash hits like “Blind To You” and is one of the biggest draws for this festival.
Headlining the other night of the festival is the equally impressive Angelique Kidjo from Benin in West Africa. This internationally famous singer has been named “Africa’s Premier Diva” by Time Magazine, and has an astounding resume of collaborations, working with artists such as Carlos Santana, Peter Gabriel, and Alicia Keys among many more. The Grammy-winning performer doesn’t only sing, but is also a huge proponent of philanthropy around the world including a foundation she created to help girls in Africa receive education. She has been making great African music for decades now, and performances like this one on Jools Holland are examples of her talent.
There are plenty of other amazing acts besides the headliners, such as the 8 piece Red Baraat from Brooklyn or the wonderful Fatoumata Diawara from Mali, just to name a few. The festival features 12 different groups and will definitely be a great experience you won’t want to miss.
