Band of Skulls with Black Pistol Fire at La Zona Rosa on Oct. 11

via bandofskulls.com

Man, Band of Skulls have been freaking busy. They opened up for the Red Hot Chili Peppers on Tuesday in Dallas — and between then and next Thursday when they play at La Zona Rosa, they’re making stops in New Orleans, Jasonville, Ft. Lauderdale, Orlando, St. Petersberg and Athens.

Geez! Well, I guess it does make sense to play the new stuff from Sweet Sour anywhere and everywhere–it’s soooo good! It’s melt-on-the-dance-floor good. And you know that they know what I mean since the videos of their two singles from the album center on dancing. Which, by the way — have you guys seen these videos? Both “Sweet Sour” and “You’re Not Pretty But You Got It Goin’ On” know what’s up. Whether it’s a group of kids showing their “hardness” by being a good dancer, or a bunch of prisoners dancing themselves free, Band of Skulls knows the power of dancing, so it’s awesome that they give us fiends something to shake it too.

They won’t be the only ones dragging feet to the dance floor at this show though. Those Canadians in Black Pistol Fire are gonna bring it too. If you don’t believe me, check it for yourself. I normally need a drink or two before I’m comfortable dancing like a maniac in front of people, but as I’m sitting here writing this, I can’t help but move around in my swivel chair in the office. (AND WHAT?)

This is an official ACL Music Festival Late Night Show, so you can get your tickets right here. All you need are tickets and dancing shoes. Go!

UTOPiAFEST

If you’re reading this post, I can assume you have eyes and you can see the poster above, so I don’t have to explain in great detail why Utopiafest is going to rule this year. You guys, it’s gonna rule real hard. White Denim? Wild Child? Ben Kweller? DR. FREAKING DOG? Yeah, man. Hard-ruling is going to happen.

For those of you who’ve never been — Utopiafest is a music and arts festival in Utopia, Texas on a 1,000-acre ranch. It’s BYOB, there’s free camping and free parking, tons of music and it goes down rain or shine, baby.

This year, this is what’s new and different — tickets are capped at 1,800 (hurry up dummy), no musical overlap, two main stages, no lines, yoga, twice as many porta potties (and twice as many cleanings of them), more kids activities, silent discos and more showers. OH, OH and disc golf! They’re bringing back disc golf this year with a 9-hole course and classes. Check that info here.

Here’s the schedg.
There are less than 300 tickets left, and the festival is about a week away. Get those tickets HERE!

Silent City Limits Festival

It’s comin’ up on festival season y’all, and among the regs like ACL and Fun Fun Fun is one to dance to silently. That’s right — silently.

For those of you who haven’t heard about Silent Frisco –it’s a production company dedicated to solving the “noise problem” that comes along with loud music. At their parties you’ll get a set of wireless headphones so you can enjoy all the badass music, but people outside the venue don’t have to hear it too. This year they’re teaming up with Strangetribe and Soul of the Boot to bring a great freaking party.

OK, now that we’re all on the same page — here’s the nitty-gritty on what’s up for this year’s festival:

1. A bunch of talented mofos are DJing on two different channels. One of the channels will be strictly Austinites, called the ACL channel, and will include greats like DJ Manny, Orion, Chicken George, BigFace, Ram Z and Happy Happy James. The second channel, or the OCL channel, will include out-of-towners J.Boogie, Motion Potion, U9lift and Matt Haze from San Francisco.

2. Both nights, Oct. 12 and 13, the 21-and-up show starts at 10 p.m. and goes until sunrise! This isn’t a party to bring your parents to, unless they can hang until the crack of dawn that is. Alcohol will be served at TABC sanctioned bars at the festival, then after-hours, juice at the juice bars.

3. Though this show is at Pine Street Station, all proceeds will go to help Austin Enchanted Forest, a venue that’s been called a portal to a different world. There’s a small creek, art installations, people hula-hooping and spinning fire, and small lights everywhere. It’s really a magical place, and normally where this festival takes place, but it’s currently closed to the public. Hopefully that won’t be the case for much longer.

4. Finally, get your tickets here and get them now. Because of capacity restrictions, tickets are going to run out fast. They’re only $20!

It’s a Beautiful Thing

If you need some inspiration to donate to Make-A-Wish foundation read this story..

Your donation will help to grant wishes like Grant’s.  Grant is a 16 year old boy with a life-threatening medical condition.  His one heartfelt wish was to “meet the LA Galaxy soccer team!”  Grant’s mother, Karen, told us, “We feel so fortunate that the Make-A-Wish Foundation was able to fulfill Grant’s dream of meeting the LA Galaxy.  After a difficult year when Grant was diagnosed, our normally very active lives became just the opposite.  It was so difficult for Grant not to be able to do the one thing he loves the most in the world-play soccer.  To witness the thrill and excitement of Grant meeting his heroes and the smile and look of “is this really happening to me?’ on his face was priceless.

We feel so blessed to have received this amazing trip of a lifetime.  You gave us a much needed reprieve from doctor visits, chemo treatments, MRI’s, and so on.  Thank you from the bottom of our hearts and thank you for what you do to give a child the thrill of a lifetime.”

How Did I Get Here? – Conversations with Musicians

Whether it be by unicorn magic, a steady diet of encouraging pancakes and pizza or simply that odd innate will to succeed, we’ve all looked around at one point or another and said, “how did I get here?” Well Johnny Goudie has recently decided to be the catalyst to finding an answer to that question, at least for those who are publicly sharing their talents in art, film, music and more. Goudie started a podcast entitled How Did I Get Here that’s started to pick up some steam.

32 podcasts in, Goudie has interviewed artists such as White Denim, Alpha Rev, The Soldier Thread, Quiet Company, Kat Edmonson and many, many others. With an audience that’s creeping up on 1500 listeners per month and a Stitcher.com pick up, Goudie’s show sends a lingering spark of hope that the radio form of media is not dead, just evolving.

JJ Grey & Mofro at La Zona Rosa Friday!

This is the kind of stuff that brings us back. Back to our youths, growing up in the swampy backwoods of Florida, fishing off the dock and jamming to Soul and Blues. Was that us or the man himself, JJ Grey? Listen to the passion and gritty soul in JJ’s voice or to his new album, Georgia Warhorse, and you’d swear you were there too. In this album, JJ collaborates with his musical hero, Toots Hibbert whom he calls “the greatest soul singer I’ve ever heard” and with Derek Trucks, guitarist from a little band called The Allman Brothers Band as well as his own Derek Trucks Band. He also refers to Trucks as “the greatest guitarist I’ver ever seen,” so we can be sure a whole lot of love and a disgusting overabundance of talent has been crammed into Georgia Warhorse.

JJ Grey & Mofro have played countless festivals in their prolific years including that top-notch Austin City Limits Festival. He’s opened for and played alongside some of Soul and Southern Rock’s legends, as he becomes something of a legend himself. JJ Grey & Mofro are coming to La Zona Rosa this Friday for what will undoubtedly be an unforgettable performance. Opening the night at 8PM is That 1 Guy. That’s his name. He’s an incredibly talented and unique…err… player of instruments. Specifically, the Butt Machine. See what we mean here:

Click “I like it” on our events page for your chance to win a pair of tickets. And don’t show up late, you won’t want to miss a minute of these performances!

Do512 Says: SPREAD EM

Do you live in Austin? Do you want to get up to 90% off at some of your favorite places around town, while doing relatively nothing at all? If you are like us here at Do512, then you are screaming YES at your computer. I realize that, lately, it seems like an Internet “phenomenon” has popped up in the form of sites bringing together local businesses and the vast number of thrifty people hunting for deals and steals in their respective cities, but, this, my friends, is far different (and far better) than any of the above. Spreadsy is a brand new site that caters to our great city and all of you people who want to take advantage of it. Granted, it might seem like “just another deal” site, but, hear me out. With guaranteed deals daily and the opportunity to receive deals FOR FREE (by just telling your friends), Spreadsy represents a new wave of these pervasive sites, and, frankly, you’d be crazy not to try it.

The Spreadsy mission is simple–to connect new customers with great businesses in the Austin community. Like other deal sites, Spreadsy accomplishes this mission through daily deals at some of the greatest local haunts, but (unlike other deal sites) it goes above and beyond to make sure that you actually receive it. While most sites require a minimum number of purchases that need to be met in order for the deal to become “active”, every single deal on Spreadsy becomes active the very milli-second it hits the world-wide web. In other words, there’s no need for you to sit around hoping that 20 more people sign up for that deal to get you 25% off your favorite Austin restaurant, because at Spreadsy EVERYONE who wants the deal automatically receives it. Everybody wins! The businesses get guaranteed customers and you get a guaranteed deal… no matter what. Sounds awesome, am I right?

Not only does Spreadsy offer you guaranteed deals daily, but the site also gives you the chance to get each and every deal FOR FREE. After setting up your own Spreadsy account, take the time to utilize the “Spread the Word” feature–a link that you copy, paste, and blast out on Twitter, Facebook, and other media outlets to “spread the word” (clever) to all your friends. Now, let’s get real for a second here. I know that most people these days spend a majority of their time on the worldwide web and a majority of THAT time on the aforementioned social media sites, so… you really have no excuse not to take advantage of this feature. If three people (just three people) sign up for the Spreadsy deal after you blast out the link, you get the deal for zero dollars. Sounds like a steal to me.

To use Spreadsy:

1) Head over to the website

2) Create an account to receive e-mails about all their fabulous deals

3) Buy the deal with an easy, one-click process (OR use the “Spread the Word” option) and YOU’RE DONE

You’ll want to return to the site daily to see what new deals they have to offer, but Do512 will also be spotlighting each Spreadsy deal. So head over to Do512 to check out what Spreadsy has in store for you, and if you have any further questions on how the whole site functions… head over to the FAQ page. Now… GO! Deals await.
