Neil Young Tribute at Hotel Vegas

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame describes him as “one of rock and roll’s greatest songwriters and performers.” He is also one of the most diverse musicians adopting different elements from styles like grunge, swing, and even electronic. But, he is still known as the famous Canadian folk, acoustic rocker we’ve listened to for years.

So, Hotel Vegas got together a groovy group of bands and musicians for Wednesday, May 9, that are still diggin’ Neil Young’s lyrics and music as much as you do!

They really outdid themselves this time… and got everyone to come play:  The Memphis Strange, Craig Marshall, Bryce Clifford, Uncle Lucius, Will Courtney (and Of Brothers and Sisters), Joshua Bain, The Cold Iron, Mandy Rowden, Rob Franco (The Venus Illuminato), Chase Frank, Johnny Dango, Emile Millar and more!

It’s really going to be a
hoot of a good time! Music starts at 9 pm, so don’t be a “hoser” and get there early, eh? Doors open at 8 pm.

Jesco White w/ Pick Up The Snake @ Antone’s 5/17

Does “Dancing Outlaw” ring a bell to any of you? Yes, we are speaking of that cult classic documentary from the early ’90s starring Jesco White. You know… The famous mountain tap dancer from a small community in the Appalachian Mountains of Boone County. Well, he is coming to Austin very soon and how can we say no to seeing someone who is referred to as “Appalachian royalty” or a “dancing outlaw” live?

Jesco White is the son of the famous D. Ray White, the man who has been recognized as one of the greatest mountain dancers in the United States. Jesco continues his father’s legacy by combining tap and clog dancing and performing across the U.S.A. On top of the “Dancing Outlaw” documentary, Jesco has also been featured in 2 other popular documentaries. He is so popular that he is even mentioned in Big and Rich’s song “Comin’ to Your City” and Hank Williams III’s song “Legend of D. Ray White.” Better yet, he also sings so his shows are quite enjoyable. A singing mountain tap dancer… We love it!

Opening for Jesco White is Pick Up The Snake, the heavy rock band from Knoxville, TN. They are extremely entertaining especially if you are a metal fan, so be sure to check them out! Little hint — Jesco usually performs live on stage with them at their shows.

Tickets for this not-to-be-missed show are $15, which can be purchased here, or click “I like it” here for a chance to win a pair of free tickets! The show is at Antone’s on May 17th and doors open at 8pm. See you there!

Tommy Trash @ Haven 5/11

Do you want to jam out to some really stellar house music? Are you in the mood to get a little crazy and just rock out at a great live show? Of course you are.

WELL, we have just the artist for you…

Tommy Trash‘s name says it all. At his notoriously wild shows, you are very likely to get crazy, maybe get a little bit trashed, and definitely have a freaking great time.

He’s an Aussie DJ who’s well-known for his rock star-sound and those insane live shows. He has since made L.A. his home and his signature sound has already made him a rising star in the dance music world.

This April he started out on his very first headlining tour across the nation. And, luckily for us, he’s making a stop in ATX.

This Friday, May 11 Tommy Trash is bringing his signature crazy live show to Haven.

Let’s get real for a second…in Austin we love to have a good time. We like to party. We just do. And there’s nothing quite as fun as going nuts on the dance floor at a really great show. And trust us, this show will be one of epic proportions. His performance will be jam-packed with “head bangin’, grey goose swiggin’, champagne sprayin’ and massive tracks you simply can’t hear anywhere else.”

But not only are Tommy Trash‘s lives shows the sickest around, but his tracks are also crazy impressive. Unlike most DJs who base their shows around remixing other artists’ work, 80 percent of Tommy’s show is centered around his original tracks, remixes, and re-edits. Tommy is classically trained in piano, trumpet, and composition. He applies these skills with his love of rock and house music to create some seriously sweet mixes.

Check out his May 2012 Mix

Essentially this is the perfect show for this time of year. Summer is in the air and all anybody wants to do is to go out, party, and just generally have a rockin’ time. And Tommy Trash’s show is the place to accomplish it all. Great dance music and a sick live show? Sounds pretttty rad to me. Don’t miss out and what is sure to a freaking great time.

The ultimate dance experience this weekend with MSTRKRFT @Emo’s East

With Mother’s Day inching it’s way closer, we’re sure many of you good sons and daughters are putting aside your hard-earned cash for a special present your mother will love. Wait, don’t spend it all though! …Not that we don’t want you to get mom something totally awesome, we just think you should take the opportunity to first hear about what kind of amazing madness you can treat yourself to if only you save $30 of it for this weekend.

Saturday, May 12, MSTRKRFT, along with Araabmuzik, Bird Peterson and Applied Pressure will be turning Emo’s East into one huge bumpin’ boom boom room.

If you’re a electronic music enthusiast, chances are you’re more than familiar with MSTRKRFT. For those who aren’t, here’s a lil’ must-know info: The group is comprised of two guys with serious talent – Toronto musician, Jesse F. Keeler and studio wizard, Al-P. Their sound is a crafted mix of house, hip-hop, grime, punk, and all kinds of electronic experimentation rolled into one. Lastly, their name (pronounced “Master Craft”, not as a super long acronym) is synonymous with master remix-ologists. In fact, their remixing skills scored them a Grammy nomination for Annie and Wolfmother’s track “Woman”. Take a listen.

“We’re interested in making people feel like they want to dance, at least a little bit, so it’s all about whatever it takes to get people there.” says AL-P.  ‘Nuf said. If you’re in the dancing mood, allow yourself to become part of the huge cult following of obsessed MSTRKRFT dance fans.

If you really want to dance but think $30 is a little steep, just make it a point to save $6 a day until the weekend – we know you can do it :) Especially when acts like Araabmuzik and Bird Peterson will also be taking stage. Check out videos of all these groups in one place on our event page. While you’re there, be sure to click “I like it” for your chance to enjoy Saturday night at Emo’s East for free!

If you got your dancing skills from your mama, maybe you can share this awesome gift of music and night of dancing with her… If not, go on and treat yourself.

Thanks for stoppin’ by :)

Flogging Molly @ ACL Live on 5/18

Founded in Los Angeles in 1997, Flogging Molly has always defied categorization.  The infectious originality of their songs is a badge of honor and key to the band’s creativity.  They infuse punk rock with Celtic instruments—violin, mandolin, and the accordion—and they merge blues progressions with grinding guitars and traditional Irish music.  Dublin-born vocalist/guitarist front man Dave King has said that while they are clearly influenced and inspired by traditional music, they manage to put their own twist on things.

The band is touring in support of their latest release Speed of Darkness, which is their fifth full-length album.  The album covers familiar ground in decidedly new ways.  As with earlier Flogging Molly fare, the songs on SoD tend toward either the overtly political or painfully personal.  What sets the album apart from even its most recent predecessor, Float, is its moderated tonality and quasi-pop feel.  The catchy choruses and polished hooks of songs like “Don’t Shut ‘Em Down” and “Saints and Sinners” show that Flogging Molly has embraced its sonic evolution and is unafraid to distances themselves from earlier, rawer offerings.

The band will be stopping by ACL Live at the Moody Theater on Friday, May 18th, bringing with them a hearty dose of their trademark Guinness soaked folk-punk.  Flogging Molly graced the same stage last year when they taped an episode of Austin City Limits.  If you weren’t able to catch that show, you won’t want to miss this second chance!

Confessions of a Do512 Intern: Do512-ing in the Live Music Capitol of the World

I first learned about Do512 during the 2011 ACL Lineup Lottery, where scratch-off tickets were given to local Austin businesses, and Austinites had to speed around the city scavenger-hunt-style to try to score a winning ticket. Do512 was one of the businesses where scratch-off tickets could be found, and I darted down South Lamar in search of the Do512 office. I think I passed by it a few times before I realized that it was that vibrant spray-painted shed behind Strut. When I walked through the Do512 door, the interior atmosphere threw me off; beer cases lined the bright yellow and teal walls, hip-looking folks sat typing away on computers while music played softly in the background. It was a little musical haven hidden behind the small, shed-like exterior. They took me into the dimly lit lounge, beer signs aglow, gave me an ACL scratch-off ticket, and offered me free swag, like a Shiner Beer T-shirt.

Ever since then, I have used Do512 to see what bands are coming to town. When SXSW rolled into town, I spent every waking preparatory hour on Do512, planning which parties to attend. Interning for Do512 didn’t dawn on me until last winter, when I decided to seek out an organization to work with for school credit. Do512 definitely seemed like the most fun and wacky choice, so I sent over my resume and the rest is history.

Don’t you hate when you’re in a class or at work, and you’re trying to tell someone about a band you just saw in concert the other night, and they have no freaking idea what you’re talking about? You say something like, “Yeah I saw Fleet Foxes at Stubb’s and Robin was wearing this red flannel shirt . . .” Then your comrade looks at you and says, “Fleet what? And who is Robin? What the hell are you talking about?” Well, that never happens at Do512. Everyone involved with Do512 has one common bond – they are all freakishly passionate about music. No matter how obscure the band or weird the music, someone here at Do512 will know what you’re talking about. And what could be more cool than that?Working alongside people that love Austin and all the music the city has to offer has been nothing short of eye-opening. In the short span of time I’ve interned at Do512, I have learned of so many new bands and cool Austin hangouts that my head has been spinning, but in the best way possible.

Keeping the beer cold- one of the most important duties of a Do512 intern

One element you cannot find at any other internship? Getting to see great live music for free. Do512 lounge sessions are pretty much the coolest little gatherings ever. It’s a chance to see great bands in a super intimate environment. The sometimes tedious pre-lounge session preparations, like lugging a giant cooler filled with ice across the parking lot or chopping up vegetables for the snack plate, all seemed worthwhile when the music began. My first lounge session was The Features, and I have no words to describe how cool it was to see them rocking out in the Do512 lounge.

I can’t not mention SXSW. The hard work all the Do512ers put into SXSW preparation was the most genuine kind of dedication I’ve ever seen. They selflessly spent many, many sleepless nights leading up to the ginormous festival adding every (and I mean EVERY) SXSW event to the Do512 SX site and making sure everything was set and going smoothly. The SXSW Belmont shows that Do512 put on, such as The Big One, were wild and crazy fun. As an intern, I spent most of my time guarding the VIP room, and I’ve never heard so many depressing life stories from slobbishly drunk people in all my years. Spilled beer aplenty and tons of crazy people, but boy was it fun! Getting the opportunity to be behind the scenes of a SXSW party was super interesting, and I have tons of respect for the venues and companies that host SXSW parties each year, as it is a ton of work.

The SXSW craziness @ The Belmont

Whatever you’re interested in, whether it be marketing, PR, music, film, photography, etc., Do512 can offer you an amazing experience unlike any other internship. In the live music capitol of the world, Do512 definitely has a treasured niche going on here, and it couldn’t be more fun writing blog posts on Alamo Drafthouse events or upcoming shows at various venues around ATX. At Do512, you’re always in the know of what’s happening – it’s your job. If a friend or family member comes to town and says, “My God, it took me forever to get here because 1st Street was closed,” you’d be able to say something like, “Well duh, you fool. That’s because the Reggae Festival is this weekend. Get with it!”

Honestly, I can’t thank Do512 enough for expanding my music obsession and allowing me to learn about the world of social media. The people of Do512 have tons of insight, and interning with them has been a genuine blast.

If you’d like to intern with Do512, send a cover letter and resume to Rachel@Do512.com, and a link to your website or blog if you have one. Good luck!

- Lily, Do512 Intern Spring 2012

David Allan Coe with Brett McCormick at Weirdo’s (5/25)

For a genre of art to reach its full potential, it needs a bad boy.  Comedy had Lenny Bruce, film has Robert Downey Jr., punk rock had…well, everybody. Point is, without a rebel, the genre becomes stagnant. For country music since the 1970s, that figure has has been David Allan Coe.

Coe has been an outlaw all his life. Not just in music, but from the actual law. As all fans of the man know, Coe spent the first few decades of life in the best breeding ground for twangy blues- namely, prison. After a colorful past where he ran into some of the more formative influences on his music, Coe made it to Nashville where he’s been entrenched as a fringe figure of the country scene since his first album, Penitentiary Blues.

The typical label attached to Coe is that of “cult figure.” While that may be the case, Coe’s success as an outsider has been so prolonged that he’s hardly the unknown that the label suggests. Coe has been a longtime collaborator with the likes of Kid Rock and the late Dimebag Darrell, writing several songs for Kid Rock and releasing the album Rebel Meets Rebel with Darrell. And while this might impress the more mainstream or heavy metal listener, true fans of Coe know him for his own merits.

As for Coe’s merits? He’s been called out by many as a racist, most notably the New York Times, but that caricature misses a subtlety to Coe that isn’t always apparent in many of his racial-epithet-filled songs. There’s a side to Coe that is as much calculated marketing effort as firebrand. The majority of his songs fit nicely into a self-sustaining mythology of a hard-scrabble life lived in exile. And while he did record a couple of X-rated novelty albums a few decades ago (reportedly at Shel Silverstein’s behest), Coe has mellowed some over the years, producing ballads like, “Would You Lay With Me (In a Field of Stone),” that would later become popularized by the likes of Tanya Tucker and Johnny Cash.

Of course, if you’re going to the concert over at Weirdo’s on the 25th, odds are you’re going to hear the kind of bombastic sing-along anthems that made Coe the larger-than-life figure he is today. Classics like “Long Haired Redneck” and “Willie, Waylon, And Me” are both tongue-in-cheek odes to the massive chip on Coe’s shoulder. His songs strike the delicate balance between bemoaning his lack of cred, while simultaneously boosting his cred as honky tonk renegade. It’s hard not to indulge in the guilty pleasures of a self-aware artist writing songs that work just as well live in a crowded amphitheater or playing on an old pickup’s busted radio.

If you’re looking to experience the live music end of the spectrum, come and check out the show at Weirdo’s at 7pm on the 25th. Tickets are only $25 in advance ($30 at the door). For that price, you get a performance from fellow country performer Brett McCormick, as well as an autographs session with Nikki Leigh. For those of you not familiar with fine literature, Leigh was the most recent Playmate of the Month. Or as the always PC Coe might say, “The Terrific Titties Title Bearer.” Regardless of your reason to come to the show, don’t miss your chance to see an icon of outlaw country. Hell, if you head to the event page and click the “I Like It” button, we’ll give you a chance to go for free. That’s enough to even make a bitter, crusty old crooner like Coe smile.

Midgetmen 10th Anniversary Party @Mohawk 05/18

Listen up Austinites, our city’s very own Midgetmen are celebrating their 10th anniversary. Ten years of playing punk music? Yup! In honor of a decade spent together, The Midgetmen are throwing themselves a party on May 18th at Mohawk.

Jon Loyens, Alex Victoria, Marc Perlman and Justin Petro decided to form a band to get free beer and to scratch that musical itch they all had buried within. While their endeavor began as a way to keep their sanity, Midgetmen are now an established band with five albums to their name. So, cheers to Midgetmen, for not only sticking together for ten years and releasing five rad albums, but for pursuing a dream despite how unrealistic it may have seemed.

BOY, The Sour Notes, La Snacks, La Migra, The Pons, Shivery Shakes, The Gary, Mole People, Treaty Oak, Teen Noir are all playing at this shindig and you won’t want to miss out! Not only that, but The Misguided Lemming will reunite for the night of May 18th only. There will be complimentary beverages provided by Treaty Oak Distilling and wonderful photobooths to capture beautiful moments to remember the night by. Click here for more information!

Justin Townes Earle w/ Tristen @ Antone’s 5/04

If you missed Justin Townes Earle over SXSW, you have a second chance to see him perform live this Friday! He really knows how to light up a stage, so believe us when we say you aren’t going to want to miss out on this show. He brings a little bit of country and a little bit of blues that treats the ears ever so kindly.

Earle’s most recent album, “Nothing’s Gonna Change the Way You Feel About Me Now,” was released a few months ago, so expect to hear new songs and a new sound. But seriously people, this album is good. Apparently, the album’s title signifies the change in Earle’s approach to art. Earle said, “I think it’s the job of the artist to be in constant transition and constantly learning more.” If you have heard this new album, you will know that it has a very different sound from his other albums, but in a really great way.

Still aren’t convinced? What if we were tell you that he won an Americana Music Award for Song of the Year? Well, it’s true. In 2011, he graced the Ryman Auditorium stage to accept the award. His music is just that awesome!

Tristen is the opening act and if you missed her over SXSW this year too, you have to go check her out. Just seeing her on stage can bring a smile to anyone’s face and her vocals will make you wish you were a singer. Trust us! Oh, if only we could be that talented…

So don’t skip out on seeing these two artists again and join fellow fans at Antone’s on May 4th for a night of great music and fun. Doors open at 8pm and tickets can be purchased here for $16 a pop or click “I like it” here for a chance to win a pair of free tickets!
