Merch Girl Documentary KickStarter Campaign

John Evans Band is a staple in the Austin music scene.  He frequents any and every honky tonk that will have him.  His daughter, Abbie, is always by his side as his accomplice and merch girl.  Based on her fearless spirit, you might not ever know that Abbie was born with an incurable skin disease, Epidermolysis Bullosa.  This passionate spitfire compelled Austin-based producers, Cary Bell and Jessica Miller, to capture the inspiring life of a true fighter.

Abbie insisted that she go on the road at 15 years old.  With much hesitation, her mother, Stacie Evans, agreed to let her make her own decisions.  Music gave Abbie a fire and strength that no one could have predicted.  This empowering story is proof that you can live life on your own terms, no matter what obstacles you might face.  Everyone can relate to Abbie at 18- figuring out who you are and who you want to be, overcoming fear of the unknown, and struggling to just be normal.

This film is bound to be one of the best documentaries of 2013 when it hits the film festival circuit this year.  As the filming wraps up, Merch Girl needs your help with the finishing touches.  They have started a KickStarter campaign in hopes of raising enough funds to get Abbie’s story told.  What is all this KickStarter hoopla, anyway?  It is an online threshold pledge system for funding creative projects.  Here, your generous donations are rewarded based on the amount you contribute, like tickets to a private screening of the film and a concert featuring Hayes Carll.  As per Kickstarter regulations, if fundraising goals are not met by Aug 23, no money will change hands.

This event will take place at Antone’s on February 10th at 2pm.  Following the screening, there will be a Q&A with Abbie and the filmmakers.  Hayes Carll, John Evans, and Emily Bell will then perform in an intimate song swap.  Not only will people experience great music and a wonderful movie, but by purchasing a ticket, they will also be helping to finish the documentary and be ever connected to Abbie’s story.

Jack Ingram & Hayes Carll Headlining 2012 Grounded in Music Benefit Concert @ Gibson Showroom 2/15

Attention all country music lovers! Gibson Guitar Showroom is letting you in on a big treat… The ever so awesome country stars, Jack Ingram and Hayes Carll, will be hitting the stage mid-month to co-headline this year’s Grounded in Music Benefit Concert. What’s better than enjoying a great show all while celebrating a great cause? Don’t know about you, but we can’t think of much.

The ACL Music Festival veteran, Jack Ingram, is known for using his psychology background from college to inspire his songwriting. Once just a Texas star, he now plays packed shows nationwide. If you like country music and haven’t seen him perform, you sure are missing out.

Texas favorite, Hayes Carll, will also be gracing the stage. He has gained a lot of praise nationally in the realm of Americana music, having received an Americana Music Award in 2008. Expect to hear a lot of songs from his most recent album, KMAG YOYO, and old favorites such as “She Left Me For Jesus.”

All proceeds from the event will go toward a variety of efforts for the organization’s music education program:

  • Purchase musical instruments for under-privileged youth
  • Provide education in musicianship
  • Teach music theory
  • Develop educational scholarships
  • Offer music-related opportunities outside of performance
So get those cowboy boots ready and tell your friends (unless you want to be dancing alone) to save the date on February 15 because this benefit concert will be a must see. Tickets are $35 for advanced general admission and $50 for those who want to pre-party before the show, both of which can be purchased here. The Grounded in Music students will start the event with a special performance, so don’t be late. Doors open at 6:30pm.
