moto gp

200 miles per hour on two wheels. That’s one of the things you can expect to see at the MotoGP World Championship this weekend at the Circuit of the Americas. The three-day sports and entertainment celebration will bring the very best international motorcycle racers to Austin to take on the hairpin turns at COTA, the only purpose-built Grand Prix facility in the United States.

To get you up to speed, MotoGP is the premier motorcycle racing championship in the world. It is also the oldest of all motor-sports World Championships, with the first competition being held in 1949. Riders from around the world compete in the eighteen-race series, which visits thirteen countries, four continents, and has global television coverage.

The Red Bull Grand Prix event will take place over three days, with Friday and Saturday designated for practice and qualification. Sunday is race day, which will feature races from the MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3 divisions.

The COTA Race will also launch the Red Bull Rookies Cup, a race featuring 24 13-16 year olds from across the globe who will race the 3.426 mile, 5.513 kilometer circuit, gaining an early advantage to becoming a MotoGP Champion.

Tickets for the Red Bull Grand Prix can be purchased at circuitoftheamericas.com, and on site each day of the event at the Circuit’s Grand Plaza ticket office. $59 Sunday-only general admission tickets can be purchased on race day, April 21, at the track. 3-day tickets start at just $89 and kids 12 and under get in free. College students and military tickets are available for $49 at the gate, with valid ID. Offer good for active military and veterans. Click here to see a detailed schedule of events for the weekend.

Fun Facts About MotoGP:

  • The sport first traveled to the United States in 1964.
  • More than 2.2 million people attended MotoGP circuit events in 2012.
  • Leasing a top-level motorcycle costs about 3.5 million dollars for a racing season.
  • The top speed in the history of MotoGP is 217.038 mph.
  • Each race is an all-out sprint to the finish, with no stops for fuel or tires.
  • Three American riders are competing this season: Texans Colin Edwards and Ben Spies, and 2006 MotoGP World Champion Nicky Hayden of Kentucky.
  • A rider can still cross the finish line and get points even if his bike is not working as long as he is in contact with the bike, even with the help of his team.

Red Bull gives local bands chance at Wings

Once upon a time, before the age of digital media and Rebecca Black, obscurity was a constant crux for musicians. Differentiation was an unwieldy and often painstaking task (Devo had fun hats!), whereas in today’s environment it is easy to get lost in the clamor for uniqueness. Musicians have made the necessary exodus from Myspace Music over to Bandcamp, with a Youtube residency thrown in for good measure. It is in this hubbub that one might casually overlook a harp-playing, Canadian disco goddess such as Maylee Todd, an artist straight from Toronto and the subject of a recent Red Bull Sound and Vision documentary . With a following on Red Bull’s SoundStage, Maylee was able to capitalize on her popularity with this focus on her music, family, and eccentric style.

Soundstage is a utility for rising artists to garner attention on a global scale, land unique gigs, and win various competitions. Bands can even be hooked up with sweet gear from partners like Fender, or be featured in a documentary like Maylee. Without a doubt, Red Bull is making an impact: Austin rockers Ume worked with Red Bull to get fellow Austinites Schmillion onto Houston’s Free Press Summerfest lineup, for instance, and such promotions are certainly not limited. In fact, the service recently bolstered its offerings by pairing with We Made This Movie and a new competition: with enough votes, your band can be featured in a new movie produced by David Letterman’s production company Worldwide Pants.

Bands can be voted up on the SoundStage Movie Challenge’s site, with a possibility of four scenes mixed with four unique bands. The current offering includes a diverse range of genres and creative styles, which in fact features many prominent Austin groups. East Cameron Folkcore, who won the Austin Chronicle’s coveted Critics’ Poll in 2011, are in the running, alongside indie rockers Wiretree (who themselves have already been featured on PBS’ Roadtrip Nation). Is the silver screen their next conquest? Similarly, Austin darlings One Hundred Flowers have their eyes on the prize after their debut release in 2010. Without a doubt, their stands a good chance some strong Austin talent can be featured in this upcoming film release.

Voting ends July 20th, so be sure to vote for your favorites by then! For a further look into the intriguing world of previous SoundStage winner Maylee Todd, check out a free remix of her “Hieroglyphics.”

RedBull Thre3Style Qualifier Party

We all know when Redbull gets involved something big is going to happen. Upon first glance this party may seem like any other with several Austin DJ’s set to perform, but place your bets now because this party will have a winner.  While you are partying and dancing to the music, these DJ’s are competing to represent Austin in the RedBull Thre3Style National Finals in Orlando, Florida.

This party doesn’t come without paramaters.  Each DJ is given 15 minutes to show what their made of.  The catch is they have to spin 3 different genres of music during those 15 minutes, hence the name “Thre3Style.”  DJs set to battle include Abe the Assasin, DJ Orion, Kid Slyce, DJ Mike Swing, DJ Protege, DJQD, Bird Peterson, and DJ Chorizo Funk.  Be sure to go crazy and yell the loudest for your favorite!

This Battle will take place next Saturday May 19th at Beauty Ballroom.  This is an 18 and over event so dont miss out!  There is going to be a special opening set by Big Once who was last year’s Thre3style national champ.  Then special guest DJ Klever is set to close.  Doors are at 8:30pm and there is a $5 cover unless you RSVP on Do512. What could be better than dancing to Austin’s favorite DJs and cheering them on to the finals.  Who knows maybe one of them will make it to the International Thre3style championship and then you would have tons of bragging rights.  You could easily say you were there supporting them since DAY 1 before they gained International acclaim. Head over to the Beauty Ballroom Saturday to find out “Who’s the Best on the Decks?”

Win VIP Tickets – Red Bull Thre3style SXSW Showcase 3/17

Red Bull Thre3style is invading Austin during SXSW once again, and it’s guaranteed to be one of the biggest and baddest parties of the festival.  Setting up shop at 8th & Trinity, the showcase will feature six world class DJ/producers, one legendary electronic duo, and one queen of neo-soul.  Fueled by Red Bull and the love of turntables, crowds should expect a wild evening that will stop traffic and send attendees into hip-hop and dance heaven.  While the event is completely free and open to the public, Do512 is giving away 50 VIP passes that will grant access to a special viewing area and other perks.

This year’s lineup includes Texas native Erykah Badu, who is known for her thoughtful lyrics and the ability to blend soul and hip hop with a deep message.  She will be backed by The Cannabinoids, a unique live ensemble that brings together eight laptops, three turntables, six keyboards, four drum machines, and a Theremin to create cosmic sounds from out of this world.  Also on the bill is the legendary Las Vegas electronic music duo The Crystal Method that will guarantee to bring the house down.

The focus of the evening is squarely placed on the appreciation of the art of the turntable, and Red Bull is bringing in some of the world’s finest DJs to show Austin how it’s done.  The headliner, Z-TRIP , is best known as being the pioneer of the mash-up movement.  Last year he brought out special guest LL Cool J to rock the crowd, so who knows what he has in store for us this go round.  Other beat-makers and legends of the ones and twos that will be making an appearance include Dan the Automator, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Datsik, and Thre3style turntable champions Big Once and DJ Headspin.  If this party is anything like last year, which drew over 10,000 fans, then we’re all in for an amazing night.  Don’t forget to click “I Like It” on Do512 for a chance to win those VIP passes!
