Get Loose at The Backyard with ZZ Top and More!

Ever sit around just wishin’ you could go to a magical place where there are armadillo races, daisy duke contests, washer games, and an all around good ole’ Texas time; all while jammin out to classic rock greats ZZ Top? Lets face it, we all have.  Well, it seems someone heard our wishes and created La Grange Fest, happening Saturday, 10/27 at The Backyard.
La Grange Fest 2012
With those iconically long beards and over forty years of performing, ZZ Top still knows how to get up and put a spell on a crowd like no other. Getting back to where it all started, ZZ Top will stroll onto stage Saturday to show just how they came to be so many years ago and why their influence on rock and roll has continued to this day. Powerful guitar solos will give you the chills, and dance melodies from songs like “Sharp Dressed Man” or “Legs” will get both young and old on their feet, belting out melodies as they sing along.

Prior to ZZ Top, the La Grange Fest will open it’s stages to Robert Randolph and The Family Band, Ruby Jane, Brad Dunn Band, Leopold and His Fiction, Cody Canada & The Departed, Jimmie Vaughan & Tilt-A-Whirl ft. Lou and Ann Barton. If that isn’t reason enough to get out to The Backyard, make sure you check out the variety of events going on throughout the day.   Now that you’re convinced, make sure to save some stomach room so you can feast on the delicious foods of various austin food trucks throughout the afternoon full of pure Texas fun.

Passion Pit at The Backyard

The boyfriend of the year award in 2008 would have to go Michael Angelakos, who wrote and performed a slew of songs for his then girlfriend as a belated Valentine’s gift.  The laptop-created collection would soon become Chunk of Change and passed out like hot tamales on the Emerson College campus, where Angelakos was enrolled.  The songs became the soundtrack to college life in the Boston area.  At a solo performance, Berklee student Ian Hultquist approached Angelakos with dreams of collaboration.  In reference to a drive-in theater, where teens were known to get “passionate”,  Passion Pit was born.

After a considerable amount of time and the addition of more band members, the collaborative efforts came to life with a full-length studio album, Manners, in 2009.  With the combination of catchy electronic and sugary pop beats, the album proved to be an instant success.  The album received critical acclaim and recognition, with many tracks being  featured in television shows and commercials.  The following year, the band opened for English rockers, Muse, made the festival circuit, and sold out venues nation-wide.  The band’s sophomore album, Gossamer, was released in July 2012 and holds true to the infectious, lyrical, can’t get that song out of my head, styling that the band has seemed to trademark.

Passion Pit returns to Austin on September 15.  One thing that can be promised from this show is a good time. It is simply impossible to see their live performance and not leave in the happiest of moods.  The Backyard will be the setting for this dance party bonanza.  Grab your tickets, and make your escape to Bee Cave to experience a real “passion pit”.

Do you like Huey Lewis & The News (and Joe Cocker)?

Huey Lewis & The News have been shaking up the pop-rock scene since their emergence more than thirty years ago. Their early work was a little too new wave for my tastes, but when Sports came out in ’83, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He’s been compared to Elvis Costello, but I think Huey has a far much more bitter, cynical sense of humor…

But The News isn’t touring with The Imposter, but rather the Soul Shouter of Sheffield, Mr. Joe Cocker. From Woodstock to Back To the Future, they collectively boast over 80 years of experience in revolutionizing rock’n'roll and popular culture. While many of their contemporaries have succumbed to retirement or creative ennui, these two acts have laudably continued their careers well into the 21st century with new releases and regular touring. While most fans would gladly travel a great distance to see such an achieved fruition in concert, locals can take comfort in knowing that they will be uniting in Austin’s own Backyard on July 22nd.

So whether you think it’s hip to be square or Bee Cave is simply up where we belong, this show boasts a line-up typically unmatched, yet continually admired. And seeing as you and a lucky friend could score free tickets via another fabulous Do512 giveaway, I would make a res for Dorsia now.

The Backyard’s getting another big one: Colbie Caillat & Gavin Degraw Tour

In the Do512 office, we’re pretty spot on about being able to predict which events will be the most popular with users on our website. Sho ’nuff, as soon as we posted the Colbie Caillat & Gavin Degraw Tour, the number of “likes” shot thru the cyber roof. No surprise – when two American Pop sensations announce that they’ll be embarking on a co-headlining tour, fans go nuts.

Even if you’re not a fan of pop music, it’s 99.7% likely that you’re familiar with Colbie Caillat‘s hit single “Bubbly“. After all, it’s one of the best-selling digital tracks of all time! You may have even heard it a few times more than you would have liked since it was a long-running radio hit, and featured on Youtube, TV and the PS2 karaoke game, SingStar Pop.

Caillat, the multi-platinum, two-time Grammy winning singer/songwriter was named Billboard‘s Breakthrough Artist of the Year, and recently performed one of her new tracks “Favorite Song” (a duet with Common) on Ellen.

Platinum recording artist, Gavin DeGraw’s hit singles “I Don’t Want To Be,” “Follow Through,” and “Chariot” were almost equally as hard to miss since they scored just as much radio time. On the tour, DeGraw is planning to perform songs from his third studio album, SWEETER, including his platinum selling hit single “Not Over You,” and his just-released new single “Sweeter,” both co-written with OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder.

So far, 2012 has been a great year for DeGraw. In March, Gavin perform “Sweeter” on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, and showed America that he isn’t just a singer when he performed on Dancing With the Stars.

Caillat and Degraw’s Summer tour will hit 22 cities before wrapping on June 29th in Highland Park, IL, and will be making their stop in Austin at The Backyard at Bee Cave. Opening for the artists will be the oh so lovable pop artist, Andy Grammer.

If you’ve never had the chance to catch a show at The Backyard : Get there early! Parking can be a pain with big shows. The City of Bee Cave is working hard to finish the road  that will extend Bee Cave Parkway through to Hamilton Pool Road by July 9th.  I am sure the flow of traffic and parking will improve by then, but it never hurts to be on the safe side and arrive with plenty of spare time!

Tickets have been available since late March, so if you want to make sure and get one, visit www.gavindegraw.com or www.colbiecaillat.com NOW. If you’re feeling lucky, you can also click “I Like It!” on Do512 for a chance to win one of TEN pairs of free tickets from us!

Enjoy kids!
